I remember my first appointment, it may be different for you, but we just mainly talked. I didn't see the actual consultant, but a nurse specialist and she started off by asking me what I knew about hepatitis C..Which when you think about it saves a lot of time. She explained all the bits that I didn't understand and talked about treatment.

She said the first step would be a biopsy (which is done in day surgery, in and out the same day) and then depending on the result of that, they would decide if treatment was suitable.

You might find it useful to write down any questions you want to ask. I always find I forget everything I wanted to ask and could kick myself after. The first appointment will be just to talk, no tests will be done, unless they want to take some more blood maybe..

They will probably schedule you for a liver biopsi if you havent already had one. It's a real quick procedure but you have to lay on your right side for four hours afterwards. Make a list of questions ahead of time so you can remember them when you get there.

Also, if you don't feel comfortable with your doctor for any reason, you should change physicians, absolutely. My husband's first doctor was a complete jackass, and made my husband and I worry needlessly. We eventually found a MUCH better doctor, one who specializes in HepC treatments, and keeps up to date with new treatments. Get copies of everything, forever more, keep them in a folder and never be afraid to ask questions.
