I've heard several different things in keeping a healthy liver but what really IS necessary besides the no alcohol? My Dr. is moving to Georgia- I went to see him yesterday to see what our game plan is and to also tell him I was contemplating going to Loma Linda. He told me that given my "weirdness" and response to treatment he feels I am better served at an Academic facility such as UCLA or Loma Linda and that there was really no one here locally he felt could handle me. But at the 3 mo. mark when I was taken off tx in May my viral load was 0 and he said it could very well stay at 0 for all we know. So I am left to find a new doctor who will undoubtedly check my viral load but for arguments sake..... it's now July, lets pretend I could still be at 0...anyway that you guys know of to keep myself at 0? To keep my liver healthy? I once in a great while will have one drink, like on my b-day, I don't eat greasy or fast foods, I take my vitamins (sometimes), I try to drink plenty of water, I do detox teas about 3-4 times a week, but I can't give up the starbucks. I'll allow myself one about 3 times a week.... any ideas or helpful info...? My new GP/Internist can't see me till Oct. and if my viral load is up I'll make the move to Loma Linda.

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Fri, July 21, 2006 - 7:11 PMThanks for the update. Sounds like you have a good plan there. Zero is such a good number, no?
I've been thinking about the same thing alot lately. I've got to get onto an optimum nutrition for the liver diet.
I hate to write this because I hate to hear it, but some exercise and good uninterrrupted sleep and a positive attitude and sharing with others were all brought up at the conference. They are going to put the illustrations up on their website - hepcchallenge.org.
Robin Roth has put together a cd of meditations for a healthy liver that I think is great. It gives me time to just lie down, focus positively on my liver and get a nice dose of hope. The cd isn't out commercially yet, but I'll post the link when it is available.

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Sat, July 22, 2006 - 12:00 AMSorry Stan but my body can't take the red meat :>) One thing I am learning to do is stay away (as much as possible ) salt that stuff is poisen for me, every time I eat it I get really sick, now if I could only figure out whar else does that to me I would be ahead of the game. Lots of fruit and veggis, tofu , an occasional small chunk of lean lean meat, fish, some whole grain bread, low or nonfat yogert (I prefer Greek Yogert) a scoop of MItchell's Ice Cream once a month for mental health, no butter olive oil only. Some white rice when I get sick (that and chicken broth and veggies and fruit all in very small doses) -

Mon, July 24, 2006 - 12:42 PMMike i am sure you've heard this before but have you tried the liquid supplements. When I have the fungal infection Plus the esph. ulcer I had no appetitie and was very nauseous!!! But if I could hold down half an ensure, I was happy...... -

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Tue, July 25, 2006 - 1:28 PMGood point mike.....but I would check out the health food stores first. Of course you would definitly want to talk with your Dr. first. I heard slim fast has a vew one that's all protien, but at the Clarks natural food store they have ones too..... Lara bars are pretty decent as well.

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Sat, July 22, 2006 - 7:15 AMwhat you will find Tiffany is that almost eveyone will have a different plan they use. the experts say if your liver is still healthy no diet restrictions are necessary, just stick to a good healty diet www.hepatitis.va.gov/vahep
diets for this like diets for anything need to be paced to your particular metabolism and body needs, I recommend a nutritionist
many use vitimins and supplements, as do I, that can be a slippery slope though if you don't do the research carefully as many over the counter supplements are not good for your liver anyway and if your liver is not healty avoid iron in any supplemental form
any type of relaxation and stress relievers can do nothing but benefit you as the enzymes released during stress destroy liver cells, I too like Stan use excercise but wish I had the patience for meditation
Stan is right about the red meat though, protein and trans fats are the building blocks of your liver if you don't eat red meat make sure your getting your proteins elsewhere -

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Sat, July 22, 2006 - 8:13 AMHow about nuts? high in protien. I agree, a good healthy diet is best. I've heard a lot of people say you have to be very careful with supplements as some can be harmful.
Stan you are action on legs. I'd love to dance for maybe half an hour but pumping iron? You must be very fit. I cycle and walk and enjoy doing those things. I have joined a belly dancing class too. Hows about that? -

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Sat, July 22, 2006 - 8:32 AMSounds like you are doing a great job Tiffany, and everyone has given you some great ideas. I am really out of shape, but I've been lifting alot of heavy iron at the junk yard, taking a multiple vitamin (no iron), fish oil and resting and napping when I need to. I'm on week 42 and I am very thankfull to God that I'm not sick and able to earn some extra money again.
I just need to buckle down again and try to kick this cigarette habbit again.

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 12:39 PMThanx for all the great tips guys and I didn't know about the protein. Maybe protein shakes could supplement my lack of red meat, I only do that once in awhile. Good idea about the nutritionist, in fact my friend just gave me the name of one. I really want to make sure they know their stuff though cause I've heard alot of herbs can be dangerous too...... -

Re: So how do we keep our liver healthy....?
Mon, July 24, 2006 - 5:58 PMI'm going to do it too Tiffany. After that talk a few weeks ago, I'm obsessed w/everything that I shouldn't be eating.
I'm thinking of taking a 7 part course on hcv nutrition. I need a life I know. It's for the volunteer gig but would work for me too.
My opinion, don't take anything, herbs, vitamins, st. john's wort, tinctures, or advice from people that aren't hepatologists period. My friends mean well and we all think we are experts.
